While watching YouTube videos, including those created by MrBeast, you are bound to see at least a few advertisements. Often, you’ll notice that creators stick to advertising the same brands repeatedly on their page. This can cause one to wonder what is the relationship between the brand and the YouTubers. A prime example of this is YouTube sensation MrBeast and his affiliation with the company Honey.
With one of YouTube’s most-viewed channels, Jimmy Donaldson, also known as MrBeast, is a content creator and philanthropist. His videos often include outrageous amounts of money and ridiculous pranks and stunts. Currently, his channel is about to reach 45 million subscribers, with videos racking up millions of views each.
YouTube and Partnerships
There are a few ways to monetize your YouTube channel, the two most recognizable are advertisements and sponsorships. Advertisements play during the YouTube video, and resemble a commercial you would see on TV. Sponsorships, partnerships, and brand deals work a little differently. Instead of watching an ad on the product, the content creator will talk about the company who financially contributed to the video.
Even though creators are partnered with or sponsored by these companies, they do not own the companies. They are engaged in a mutual relationship where both parties benefit, Honey gains popularity and downloads, and in return MrBeast is financially compensated and able to make videos.
What is Honey?
Honey is a free browser extension that once installed, finds and applies coupons at checkout. It is easy to use, and saves you money and the time you would normally spend searching for deals or looking for coupons. Thousands of retailers use this platform, including Target, Stubhub, and Sephora. On top of that, millions of users have signed up to receive the benefits that Honey offers, proving it to be a reliable and popular way to save money. One way Honey has gained popularity is by sponsoring creators like MrBeast, and David Dobrik.
Does MrBeast Own Honey?
Honey was founded by Ryan Hudson and George Ruan, and was acquired by PayPal in 2019. Honey is a subsidiary of PayPal which is a public company, which means stocks are used for representing ownership. If MrBeast owns stock in Paypal, then technically he would be a part owner of Honey. If not, then no, he doesn’t own Honey.
MrBeast’s Relationship with Honey
MrBeast is able to make content and earn money by being sponsored by Honey. He has even created videos explaining how Honey works, how to install the extension, and other promotional material for the company’s YouTube channel.
You can see an example of this sponsorship at the beginning of the video in which MrBeast donates $50,000 to Ninja, the notorious Fortnite player. He pauses the video to tell his viewers about the company funding the video, Honey. For several minutes MrBeast describes the installation process, benefits, and demonstrates using the application. Scrolling through the comments, you will notice a few of the top comments aren’t about the video but are actually referencing the Honey sponsorship. Some poke fun at how often MrBeast references the company, while others comment on the usefulness of the app. These comments are evidence that these sponsorships effectively impact viewers.
In addition to the sponsorship, MrBeast’s online store is one of the retailers utilizing Honey. Meaning when you shop for MrBeast merchandise, Honey will get you the best deal on his items.
MrBeast does not own the browser extension Honey, but he is certainly heavily associated with the company. Many YouTubers and content creators including MrBeast have partnered with Honey, contributing to its recent surge in popularity. Despite not owning the company, it is clear by his fame and wealth that MrBeast is benefiting greatly from Honey.
