Why Did Dude Perfect Leave CMT?

The Dude Perfect Show, starring the crew from the viral YouTube channel, first aired on CMT back in 2016. Five best friends, Tyler Toney, Cody Jones, Garrett Hilbert, and twins Coby and Cory Cotton, document their day-to-day adventures at their headquarters in Frisco, Texas.

But just a year after it premiered, the show was moved to CMT’s sister station Nickelodeon, which is also owned by Viacom. This left many fans wondering what caused the switch.

About the show

The Dude Perfect Show first aired on April 14, 2016, on CMT after being announced the previous September. After the first season, the show moved over to Nickelodeon for its second and third seasons from 2017 until 2018.

So far, there has been no word on a season four, and fans have no idea whether it’s canceled or renewed. Of course, now the pandemic could be putting a damper on things, but it’s been off the air for two years already.

Reasons for the move

Some have speculated that the show was doing poorly on CMT. During its very first season, the show brought in an average of 250,000 viewers per episode. This rose to 990,000 during its first season with Nickelodeon but fell back to 650,000 during the third season.

Others thought the show may get canceled. Historically, shows switching channels has been a sign that they will be soon end.

According to avclub.com,

Switching networks is usually the kiss of death. A long list of hit shows, including Diff’rent StrokesFamily MattersGet SmartThe Hogan FamilyScrubsT.J. Hooker, and Taxi, were canceled after long runs, picked up by another network, and then quickly canceled again.

Nickelodeon — a dream come true

Regarding the switch to Nickelodeon, Dude Perfect said,

We all grew up on Nickelodeon, and it’s a dream come true for Dude Perfect to find a home on Nick. We can’t wait for the fans to join us on our journey of endless fun and laughter.

Many adults today may remember the Nickelodeon show “Double Dare” which originally ran from 1986 through 1993, with it’s use of slime. In this video, Dude Perfect talks about the honor of being slimed. Of course, the team would be excited to have their own show on a channel they grew up watching. Nothing says, “We made it!” quite like that.

Nickelodeon — a better fit

Dude Perfect targets their content to all audiences, especially a younger crowd. While CMT is a great family channel, Nickelodeon seems to be more fitting for them.

CMT, or Country Music Television, may have not been the perfect fit for a show about five friends making trick shots.

Their funny challenges are also a good match for Nickelodeon, which is known for their use of obstacle courses in their shows. Airing on Nick gives them the perfect outlet for their kind of content. It’s a match made in heaven.

Conclusion

For all we can tell, Dude Perfect really wanted to air on Nickelodeon, and it seems to have been an excellent fit for the audience. As for if their show will be renewed, no one really knows. Nickelodeon hasn’t made any kind of a statement about a possible season four, but they also haven’t come out and said it was canceled, either.

We hope that mystery will be solved soon!
