Why Does YouTube Have So Many Ads?

Have you found that your recent YouTube visits have been plagued by constant ads? Over the last few months, users have found that their viewing habits are having to change as the videos they stream are constantly being interrupted by advertisements. Why does YouTube have so many ads?

Boosting its revenue

The primary reason for YouTube to be increasing the number of ads its users see is so that it can increase its annual revenue. Since its launch in 2005, YouTube has grown to become one of the biggest social media websites in the world, with an estimated five billion videos being watched every single day.

With no true competition, YouTube has monopolized the video streaming service and generates an incredible $15 billion a year, which equates to roughly 10% of owner Google’s entire revenue. In addition to the advertisements being seen on every video, YouTube is also making a steady income through the 20 million subscribers who have signed up to become Premium members.

Why are there more ads?

In recent years, many viewers have complained about an increase in the number of ads that they have been seeing. The primary reason for this is down to YouTube’s monetization policy, which is the platform’s way of paying content creators who publish videos on the site.

Previously, any video that was over 10 minutes long was eligible to be monetized by the creator for midstream ads, but as of July 2020, the platform has reduced that to eight minutes, opening the option out to even more creators. Although a difference of two minutes might not seem like much, in the world of content, it is a huge difference and has enabled even more channels to add advertisements to their videos, seeing a significant rise in the number of videos that non-Premium viewers are seeing.
